<div>
Luckily for me it's just after my birthday so I hold out and Chris buys my gifts from there so I get lots of things I really want. Below is a picture of my haul and where each item came from. Excuse the pic, it's a quickie I took with my iPhone and then Instagrammed!<br />

The pop-up shop has now been open for 5 weeks and we have been really busy promoting it, and the work we sell, a lot of the time using social media.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
One of the ways we have been showcasing products is by each staff member picking their own "Staff Pick" when they are working in the shop. We then display it on the table as people come in so it is easy for them to find when they visit.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I thought i'd show you some of the fabulous work that has been chosen as Staff Picks over the last 5 weeks. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQI_yJB8gXJLlBq6f5jrBVYh_6MaBKJT8ZRaoz6PvlNSgtc0Zh3PdJbDyVBPyDKrvssNM6Qfi1xd6B8wb6NOgCLPf_2MsFVkuLFR3DYW-ZFi8uPxaHBqBiEtm-7st851xVHalQK02_qg4/s640/blogger-image-690437384.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
For the last few weeks I've been concentrating on practicing my drawing and illustration skills. I want to be better at drawing people, facial features, proportions and hands and also develop a style I can call my own. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Every year I have students who hate drawing from observation. Usually because they struggle with it so don't want to do it. And I always say that the only way they will improve is to practice. Even if no-one ever sees it, practice is what makes perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
So here are the results of my practising. Some went wrong. Some aren't finished. Some i'm really pleased with. </div>

I'd been pretty good at updating this hear blog and then it slipped back into obscurity again. I'm sorry for that but there is good reason! We held our summer street market on the 22nd June and then the very next week we opened our shop. So it's been a bit manic. </span></div><div><br></div><div>So because that's the reason why I've been AWOL I thought it would be the best thing to blog about. I'm sorry I've dropped off the radar a little bit. We've been so so busy getting the pop-up shop ready I've thought about nothing else. And definitely haven't had time to make any of my own work. <div><br></div><div>So I though the most sensible thing to do would be to post about the shop again. I hope that's not boring! </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihyIlu1L0W6CyZH98Fe-v_aycDJEUzkX-zBPQWp-jED6B4VuhT12tRCRLbLEsRpVavbJ-gZFMsyMyLtAr9jsJH_WJtSBiYH1yPRybjxZp74NNqEX1Xn_NcuskuM-vIdoiOkR8jifbleR8/s640/blogger-image-255824939.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihyIlu1L0W6CyZH98Fe-v_aycDJEUzkX-zBPQWp-jED6B4VuhT12tRCRLbLEsRpVavbJ-gZFMsyMyLtAr9jsJH_WJtSBiYH1yPRybjxZp74NNqEX1Xn_NcuskuM-vIdoiOkR8jifbleR8/s640/blogger-image-255824939.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">We had loads of stock come in and I'll be previewing some of the fabulous goods we currently have in stock in the coming weeks. So we changed the window display, it was a little painful to clean our painted logo off the window. Hours to create and minutes to remove. Now it's full of stock and bits of furniture we've discovered. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Above you can see me tweaking the display a little. It was so much fun unpacking all the wonderful things we've been sent. Like Christmas but none of it was for us! <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">This year is looking very exciting for I Make Fun Stuff because we were recently asked if we would open a pop up shop in our town, Ipswich. Of course we said, YES! </span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Ipswich is currently part of an EU funded project called Recreate. It is also happening in other towns in the UK and Europe. In Ipswich, Recreate aims to improve the economic prosperity of our town by helping new creative businesses grow and make use of empty shop spaces. Their website at <a href="http://www.ipswichrecreate.org/">http://www.ipswichrecreate.org</a> gives you stacks more information so go take a look at that. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
So we said yes to the shop knowing that we three would not be able to staff it as we all have full time jobs but by using volunteers and local arts organisations that would continue Recreate's work of supporting creative entrepreneurs. We will stock the shop with a selection of work by the fantastic people who take stalls at our regular markets and other small creative businesses from around the UK. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We got the keys on Tuesday so we checked out the space and did some measuring and then on Thursday we drew on the window....</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD6IYZVAc9X_kGGYnZSKcEHE9inlpUp7rW_kwftGSjiX_P4IcdyYVWCUx3yuqcZfEFD-qPP9Q4C4Araa8382be2aPQB9EExEIf1U4qjmQOkAEQEa87MkHo5OhFGrv2noz68TrbuPBtga4/s640/blogger-image-1037702703.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgD6IYZVAc9X_kGGYnZSKcEHE9inlpUp7rW_kwftGSjiX_P4IcdyYVWCUx3yuqcZfEFD-qPP9Q4C4Araa8382be2aPQB9EExEIf1U4qjmQOkAEQEa87MkHo5OhFGrv2noz68TrbuPBtga4/s640/blogger-image-1037702703.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We also made a time lapse video of the little project. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/WMzBvUadpGA" width="492"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We plan to document the process of setting up the shop and when we change the window displays so subscribe to our channel to keep up to date with videos.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
We are now busy sourcing vintage and retro furniture to use for display and contacting our sellers to send us products to stock the shop. This is probably the most exciting thing to happen to I Make Fun Stuff in our 5 years of existence!</div>

Do any of you start a project and then just leave it, unfinished because the momentum you had has gone? I do that too often than I should really. </span></div><div><br></div><div>This design started off as just the three circle prints in yellow, green and turquoise. I planned to print lots of different coloured circles originally but then the other week I was inspired by some wrapping paper I bought that was lots of different shapes. So I decided to just go for it on top of the circles. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_ciTREBJFPF1OLxslWVTld2Vb8QLsD68IKDvdjXnYWGZEJAbsNuye1gVE2cxqd109nSDZNHkW8BRBvttyL2t5eImIuH17dWKIZqXsXRyX8PSrgR_fB6oIKpZ2mEtp_2jX702KjMPiGOM/s640/blogger-image--1383077740.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj_ciTREBJFPF1OLxslWVTld2Vb8QLsD68IKDvdjXnYWGZEJAbsNuye1gVE2cxqd109nSDZNHkW8BRBvttyL2t5eImIuH17dWKIZqXsXRyX8PSrgR_fB6oIKpZ2mEtp_2jX702KjMPiGOM/s640/blogger-image--1383077740.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I also was rather excited because I had a little fluorescent pigment I wanted to try so I cut these little confetti shapes and printed over the top. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">What I love most about screenprinting is the layers you can create from printing colours on top of each other. I predominantly use a print paste which has a transparent base giving you that layered depth of colour. However the fluorescent pigment works best in an opaque base and I think adds a great POP of strong bold colour to the design. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">You know it's good when you shout "OH MAN" when you lift up the screen! I printed the confetti on to 3 blank bags I had and will add to that design over the next few weeks. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkTIrUxGVK6KBzMRSeoyPitg7tCBKgpS0bFbqmHb5B7QAlkF5PoYHlj4CXW9F_WiDO7r6KZQJKpdazWvyAuhUX3OOm8UvBFcfXPnUZVBMq_cLmf-XJMt9pBBf57aOIh4oPICU4GhWmt1Q/s640/blogger-image-2028409520.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkTIrUxGVK6KBzMRSeoyPitg7tCBKgpS0bFbqmHb5B7QAlkF5PoYHlj4CXW9F_WiDO7r6KZQJKpdazWvyAuhUX3OOm8UvBFcfXPnUZVBMq_cLmf-XJMt9pBBf57aOIh4oPICU4GhWmt1Q/s640/blogger-image-2028409520.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">If you don't already follow me on Twitter and Instagram my handle is @jesskabroad I'm going to have some exciting news to announce tomorrow so follow if you're interested. </div><br></div><br></div>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11665025931197824891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3781962137379902748.post-62457073436064333322014-04-08T15:44:00.002+01:002014-04-08T16:00:19.423+01:00Handmade & Timeless Market 6th April 2014Today was the second I Make Fun Stuff market of the year in Ipswich Town Hall. We had 41 stalls offering beautiful handmade wares and the best vintage clothes and homeware you could imagine.<br />

I didn't have time to take photos of every stall sadly but I did have time to part with some money and buy some fabulous things. So here are the awesome things we bought.....</div>

A beautifully neat handmade notebook by <a href="http://shedquartersonline.co.uk/">Shedquarters</a>. These guys were new to the market and came all the way from Cambridge. <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Yes friends I have finally lost my mind but I'm hoping you'll be able to see why. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I design and print all the little backing cards that my brooches and earrings are pinned too and my business cards. I'll leave you to decide whether I do that well or badly because I am never happy with my branding. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I use this awesome uncoated card from <a href="https://secure.eco-craft.co.uk/acatalog/">Eco-craft </a>called Hairy Manilla (gotta LOVE that name!) It's the same as I use for printing my bicycle and cat cards onto. I slice them all up using a knife and cutting board, nothing very exciting there. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Until!!! I was looking round my local <a href="http://www.therange.co.uk/">The Range</a> store and found this little chap...</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBj0rYqJZtAQMvpRTI5QPbce4peODicTb3ZJjU-GZz1rO41xxULhTze12FfIQP0Y1yFBy82e8d8VW2LqptbfdM4ZOwhyphenhypheny-hnbvSRav7QxKi9BG1yUUh7_gKIn2nKxZOQfjbEIug-R1f4k/s640/blogger-image-1720299820.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBj0rYqJZtAQMvpRTI5QPbce4peODicTb3ZJjU-GZz1rO41xxULhTze12FfIQP0Y1yFBy82e8d8VW2LqptbfdM4ZOwhyphenhypheny-hnbvSRav7QxKi9BG1yUUh7_gKIn2nKxZOQfjbEIug-R1f4k/s640/blogger-image-1720299820.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It's a corner punch. What does it do? Well, it cuts the corners off your card. And look how good it makes them look... </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZw1dtBBVLz0tfm6DQm_KSjzst36hyphenhyphengg1TXaIJcrjndEPkqWu-UU_DUeFkOdkCDeUn0MiKTpic1HRuRfRgP_x7RFa_ASvVQ9GxHnhdilf67RUN6GrHC03eWJJ0PlaqW-9BWyb9ATiKrs/s640/blogger-image-78408384.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtZw1dtBBVLz0tfm6DQm_KSjzst36hyphenhyphengg1TXaIJcrjndEPkqWu-UU_DUeFkOdkCDeUn0MiKTpic1HRuRfRgP_x7RFa_ASvVQ9GxHnhdilf67RUN6GrHC03eWJJ0PlaqW-9BWyb9ATiKrs/s640/blogger-image-78408384.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
I mean, you can't tell me those cards don't look so much more fancy with rounded corners! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHPJT5yjweoCQZIo4JbYodi0W9xEM7sgNV7HrAvs-ZcIxkosT3m5GVxQdtSKASS0HlpXpgCJlXpe3u-f9C9Vxi7HVaZoCe46Aua44NwEpdmuC55rs1P5ouNoqjyR87As20PwwFrtt_f_k/s640/blogger-image-1020407053.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHPJT5yjweoCQZIo4JbYodi0W9xEM7sgNV7HrAvs-ZcIxkosT3m5GVxQdtSKASS0HlpXpgCJlXpe3u-f9C9Vxi7HVaZoCe46Aua44NwEpdmuC55rs1P5ouNoqjyR87As20PwwFrtt_f_k/s640/blogger-image-1020407053.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
It just adds a little sumthin' don't you think? So much cuter! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
And the best thing? The punch is like £5! I can't remember precisely how much but I'm telling you, it's worth it! Look at those lovely smooth corners. </div>
<br />

It's been a little while since I posted about being creative and things I have been working on. The difficult thing is however, that I haven't really been very creative or worked on anything recently. So today's post is going to be about what I do when I'm struggling to come up with ideas or just being creative at all. <div><br></div><div>So, to start, I get really fed up and moany! I mope about a bit and sit at my desk with a blank page in front of me and all kinds of exciting materials like washi tape, stickers, Posca pens and graphic markers and still can't come up with anything. Cue more moping! </div><div><br></div><div>When I've finally pulled myself together I get together a stack of books for inspiration. Our house is a bit like a non-fiction library. I have a problem. I admit it. BUT I am so grateful for having many exciting books to flick through in times of need. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcJ3-DGSSrFr7Mfy9KEnLnNWV8KQ8Et5hyphenhyphends9azwhW-MDUwgdeqM73fZGVzFa-jHbrUImtRSSRd-2dAqcxVCT3_g0NbdNikaFC-ouIhlrZYYyf0yTtZCY-rJ27iwFOq_Z2eOqG-f-2c1A/s640/blogger-image--619880248.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgcJ3-DGSSrFr7Mfy9KEnLnNWV8KQ8Et5hyphenhyphends9azwhW-MDUwgdeqM73fZGVzFa-jHbrUImtRSSRd-2dAqcxVCT3_g0NbdNikaFC-ouIhlrZYYyf0yTtZCY-rJ27iwFOq_Z2eOqG-f-2c1A/s640/blogger-image--619880248.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Just a the stack I'm currently pouring over!</div></div><div><br></div><div>I'll also doodle while watching TV. This stops me from worrying too much about the results. I find that because I make products I'm always thinking about if what I'm doing is worthwhile because I can make money from it. That is, in fact, utter madness. Every doodle and experiment is worthwhile because it's a journey, a process that may result in a fantastic idea and a very worthwhile product! Also just sketching or doodling is fun and keeps being creative exciting. </div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhtJ9XfH6_4hxFcifTkVuuWsxNf_04UObh8_WvTuteV3nuEEmWTGG2g5PNh1KiAkzVsbO9VUi3pY38Rzj-yS_vZC1N6QNg-lzc1qqflSIMaCip7s3gDt_49mijQy7dXNoM6fzq-fNFmF4/s640/blogger-image-360446749.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhtJ9XfH6_4hxFcifTkVuuWsxNf_04UObh8_WvTuteV3nuEEmWTGG2g5PNh1KiAkzVsbO9VUi3pY38Rzj-yS_vZC1N6QNg-lzc1qqflSIMaCip7s3gDt_49mijQy7dXNoM6fzq-fNFmF4/s640/blogger-image-360446749.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I doodled this page while watching Exit Through The Gift Shop a documentary about Banksy. </div><br></div><div>Another trick I do is try and recreate something that has really inspired me. You can learn so much about a material or a technique by trying to do it yourself and then you can manipulate it or develop it into your own work. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYaAZxqIA_3AE_Sncc_RluxcgJpAQurVB0R4bE763QSxpzbfPw8BdOtFcA_UuCOcpGeYGsY3f0Q37FmXLhgV-5PGIHOEvNR5Uniu6hgtP0Lv1m6BwPNpWMr8So-XvwHm4UHhh8N_8JAdU/s640/blogger-image--1640769968.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYaAZxqIA_3AE_Sncc_RluxcgJpAQurVB0R4bE763QSxpzbfPw8BdOtFcA_UuCOcpGeYGsY3f0Q37FmXLhgV-5PGIHOEvNR5Uniu6hgtP0Lv1m6BwPNpWMr8So-XvwHm4UHhh8N_8JAdU/s640/blogger-image--1640769968.jpg"></a></div>This collage was inspired by the beautiful branding of the Sochi Winter Olympics and Paralympics. <br />
The reason I decided to write about it is because I spend a lot of time telling my students how important it is to come up with a variety of different ideas before making a final outcome. Every week and probably in most sessionz I'm telling them to come up with at least 3 different ideas and how their work will be improved for it, but as you have probably ascertained, they don't listen, or I wouldn't be saying it over and over again<br />
<br />
I can preach this to my students because I know how important it is for me, as a maker of products. If I always went with the first idea that sprung into my head and didn't sketch it out first I would make a lot of rubbish and lose a lot of money!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO7exJ72vYZeM1nObOr6M2mJRGQ09QQ1mREALJLJojEzx6qv5s6Jflo7EscYQa3Duu6LAdpagG3Wz5URneS4z89rzQcpnLfr5PAx9s8b6HjIVGC7K0ZqpLAJ6OaA7U_wLNby01wpV9rVI/s1600/CatDrawingDevelopment.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO7exJ72vYZeM1nObOr6M2mJRGQ09QQ1mREALJLJojEzx6qv5s6Jflo7EscYQa3Duu6LAdpagG3Wz5URneS4z89rzQcpnLfr5PAx9s8b6HjIVGC7K0ZqpLAJ6OaA7U_wLNby01wpV9rVI/s1600/CatDrawingDevelopment.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So here is just a simple example of how I have played with ideas before refining and perfecting using Adobe Illustrator to create a final product. This image is now used for brooches, earrings, greeting cards and tote bags. They are selling well but if I'd chosen to use the first cat drawing at the top it may not have been so successful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It can take a lot of thinking, experimenting, redrawing, and refining before I'm happy with an idea and it's a good job too. I have made the mistake of just screen printing first ideas in the past and those are definitely the products I now like the least and have to lower the price to sell.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have you learnt this lesson the hard way as well? I wonder if my students will understand it one day!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<a href="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1/10565_10152280026723569_214869232_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/t1/10565_10152280026723569_214869232_n.jpg" width="400"></a></div>
<br>
As an artist/maker and an organiser of craft and vintage markets I have experience of trying to make new, original and well made work for myself and judging other people's work by my own standards.<br>
<br>
Today's blog is going to be a little bit about how we decide what we are looking for in stallholders for the I Make Fun Stuff markets and how that has made me work harder on my own work.<br>
<br>
As market organisers it's really important to us that the quality of work on sale is really high, it is original, so you can't just walk into a high street shop and buy something similar and you wouldn't see it sold at a traditional craft market.We want to be different from the typical craft fair and offer the more contemporary makers a platform to sell their work and attract the right audience. The main reason we started I Make Fun Stuff is because my work wasn't selling at fairs where the others stallholders sold quilts, ceramics, wood turning etc. It just didn't fit in.<br>
<br>
There are a few questions we ask ourselves when judging whether we think an applicants work is what we want or not.<br>
<br>
<ul>
<li>Have we seen it before? (Have we seen similar products from other people?)</li>
<li>Would it be sold at a traditional craft fair? </li>
<li>Does it suit our target audience?</li>
<li>Is it well made?</li>
<li>Do I wish I'd thought of that myself?</li>
<li>Do I want to buy their work?</li>
<li>Does it "fit" with the general feel/ethos of the market?</li>
</ul>
<div>
It is important to us that we are confident and passionate about the work of everyone who sells at our events. We don't accept every application and that is really difficult, we don't want to let people down but not everything we see is what we are looking for. Not everything we see is made well enough. Not everything we see is new and original and when it comes down to it, if our customers don't want to buy it our stallholders don't make any money. If the standard of our markets drops because our customers aren't interested in the stalls we won't be able to do them anymore so we will stand by our decisions. Also, we want to offer something unique that is exciting for our good town of Ipswich and so the work on offer needs to be unique too.</div>
<div>
<br></div>
<div>
All these amazing makers and artists inspire my own work greatly and motivate me to continue to develop my products and ensure that they are the highest quality possible. I have often compared my products to someone else's, for example someone else who screen prints bags, and felt their's are better. Whether they are or not it pushes me to improve what I do and that can't be bad!</div>

Today I'm going to tell you why, as well as show you some of my favourite handmade items I've bought online, from craft markets and independent shops.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV-r6tHngxEEtXm4oW-KxVzZZlq1VDECQoIV-5r_ZH8MjA2w7WsUFUQldrGnmRrx-dEcUzQn-p8l6BEJ8fnwxohNnwQuKo2b5PmES9cysLgIO5Hx78PKsgEyoXjK2_law5Kw1lzbLB5ik/s1600/DollyKnitsHairBow.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiV-r6tHngxEEtXm4oW-KxVzZZlq1VDECQoIV-5r_ZH8MjA2w7WsUFUQldrGnmRrx-dEcUzQn-p8l6BEJ8fnwxohNnwQuKo2b5PmES9cysLgIO5Hx78PKsgEyoXjK2_law5Kw1lzbLB5ik/s1600/DollyKnitsHairBow.jpg"></a></div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought this fabulous bow from an awesome shop called Cherry Cherry that used to be in Norwich. Sadly it closed down but you can find <a href="https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/dollyknits">Dolly Knits</a> online. Click the name for the shop!</div>
<br>
When I started making my own products one of the first things I did was create an Etsy account and make a shop. This was a great place to start because I could easily see what other people from all over the world were making and it gave me a bar to work towards when it came to the quality of my work. It also meant I was massively inspired and tempted by all the wonderful handmade things. I will admit I did spend some of my hard earned pennies on goodies from Etsy.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM8rlxZOxnaIM-2wWoh8zFFIDF9aYyVurWd0Zbg_gubxiUQG047eU5YW-udn5uDxK9Ss2JCOrsaKx7HQnNTsqA4S43JMlXAXsnBBSx1LywA65MBBlHKgEL3XoVLN1W2vUIzPrloCaOYGk/s1600/NecklacesLucieEllenNoMilkTo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiM8rlxZOxnaIM-2wWoh8zFFIDF9aYyVurWd0Zbg_gubxiUQG047eU5YW-udn5uDxK9Ss2JCOrsaKx7HQnNTsqA4S43JMlXAXsnBBSx1LywA65MBBlHKgEL3XoVLN1W2vUIzPrloCaOYGk/s1600/NecklacesLucieEllenNoMilkTo.jpg"></a></div>
<a href="http://www.lucie0ellen.etsy.com/">Lucie Ellen</a> and <a href="http://www.nomilktoday.etsy.com/">No Milk Today</a> can both be found on Etsy. Click the names for their shops!</div>
<br>
The main reason I like to buy handmade is because you know the passion that has gone in to making each product. As creative people we want to be happy with what we make, we want it to be high quality and we want it to last, because if we aren't happy with it, if it isn't high quality or if it doesn't last we are solely to blame and we have let ourselves down. We are judged by our products in a way that big retailers like Topshop, Habitat etc aren't. You complain to a customer service assistant, or you complain to me, to my face.<br>
<br>
You also know, when buying handmade, that you won't find that product on your high street (unless you're lucky enough to have awesome independent shops selling handmade items) You are in pretty good stead to own something none of your friends have, and lets admit, who doesn't love an "exclusive"? Sometimes you may own the only one of that kind if the maker won't make two items the same! My grey and mustard knitted necklace by Aeron Hall-Apps is just that. (Sorry guys she doesn't have a website or Etsy shop, but often takes a stall at our Handmade & Timeless markets so i'll keep you posted)<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ6e_niy0GihtKoLV1AOdDGGjBV9lHYEbMbYZnHRxW7DZ1MrhWR5lhvn1UQHJvbtphj-dC1_JucE24i88v_42pJcrVjAmkM37ANdmFLbM3nAGbBLs6K2ZcVP5SThJoZj6voTI25of12nk/s1600/AeronHallAppsNecklace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ6e_niy0GihtKoLV1AOdDGGjBV9lHYEbMbYZnHRxW7DZ1MrhWR5lhvn1UQHJvbtphj-dC1_JucE24i88v_42pJcrVjAmkM37ANdmFLbM3nAGbBLs6K2ZcVP5SThJoZj6voTI25of12nk/s1600/AeronHallAppsNecklace.jpg"></a></div>
<br>
Lastly, buying artwork straight from the artist really does it for me. You get to chat to them about their work and get to know why they make the work they do. You also see a great range of what they make, it might not just be prints, paintings, collages or photographs. They may use those images for other products like notebooks, greetings cards or postcards. Katrine Macklin sells t-shirts, button badges, notebooks and artwork as well as the cards you see below.<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZsKDlLsAaKTImZ7h4XfWv-LjrwVwox8n8KmFDSo-hjh7VjcztkBzOvcPKY9pk_Rsq2ejoil-psCmI73ibHjGOB2XCcaUtXsNBASNfF9j4Q4kOCXMXCk5pjm_h8ejchFx-P6gR9iXWCs/s1600/KatrineMacklinCardPack.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjPZsKDlLsAaKTImZ7h4XfWv-LjrwVwox8n8KmFDSo-hjh7VjcztkBzOvcPKY9pk_Rsq2ejoil-psCmI73ibHjGOB2XCcaUtXsNBASNfF9j4Q4kOCXMXCk5pjm_h8ejchFx-P6gR9iXWCs/s1600/KatrineMacklinCardPack.jpg"></a></div>
<br>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Katrine's work can be found on her <a href="http://www.katrinemacklin.com/">website</a>. She promises she will be opening an Etsy shop soon. She had a stall at the last I Make Fun Stuff market too so hopefully she'll join us again soon. </div>
<br>
So that's a little about why I love to buy handmade. Have you got any handmade treasures? Tell me your favourite makers in the comments below!Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11665025931197824891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3781962137379902748.post-2579872887109072612014-02-19T10:57:00.000+00:002014-02-19T10:57:09.565+00:00Tiny CatsI'l be honest, I find it really hard to blog regularly. From the dates and frequency of my last posts you will definitely see that I just can't post even once a week. I just don't feel like my life is generally interesting enough to post often but I am endeavoring to change that.<br />
<br />
I have been making so many new things recently that it seems a shame to not share them and you know how it is, blogging gets you followers and followers like your work, I'll do my best to keep you interested!<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's taken a little while to get these little cats made, just because of Christmas and having to rework the images (and i'm bad at Photoshop/Illustrator so try to avoid it!) The wait was worth it though, they are so cute and tiny when sat next to the cat brooches! Sorry there are no images of them in ears, I can't wear my own earrings. Some day I will pluck up the courage to go and get them pierced again. The cuteness of these may help me find some balls!</div>
<br />
They're available from my Etsy shop priced at £4.00. Select them in my little shop widget on the side or click the <a href="http://www.hellopushkin.etsy.com/">hotlink.</a>Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11665025931197824891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3781962137379902748.post-91423299203526243482013-10-06T18:09:00.001+01:002013-10-06T18:09:30.064+01:00Cats!Anyone who knows me, knows I absolutely love cats. So it's a big surprise that I haven't made any cat shaped products before now. The truth is I've never created a sketch or a drawing that I either liked or could see as a product. Those of you with children will understand what I mean. No, I am not talking about the weather!<br />
<br />
I don't have children but as some of you may know I teach them and here it is again, the beginning of the year and another troop of sixteen year olds are under my care. It takes a lot of the year to get back in the swing of things and to get to know the students. Once you've reached the point where you understand how they work and they understand what you expect of them you can have really entertaining lessons for yourself and the students.<br />
<br />
So for now I am filling in paperwork, writing projects, organising materials and sending numerous emails. Because my world is currently ruled by work I thought i'd give you a glimpse into a project i'll be running with our L3 Art & Design students. To give you an idea of what L3 means; these guys have just left school and have A*-C grades.<br />
<br />
Ok, so they have a drawing lesson on a Tuesday, creative practices on Wednesday and a specialist workshop on a Friday. They'll be doing textiles with me on Fridays so we're going to start by drawing birds at the museum and then using those images to make paper stencils and then screen print them. These are the artists i'll be suggesting they look at for visual reference, all images are from the websites/blogs of the artists.<br />

I want to do it more often and I want to find it easy but I struggle to find things that I've been doing interesting! I guess because I work all the time I don't feel like I'm doing anything worth blogging about.<br />
Now that could be debatable, but that depends on if you find the everyday doings of an art & design lecturer interesting. Probably not.<br />
<br />
However as it's been such a long time since I last blogged I do have a few things I can tell you about. And I will try my best to be more interesting and post more regularly. I think I just don't imagine what i'm up to could be of interest, but who knows, someone might like it!<br />
<br />
On to the pictures<br />

We had an I Make Fun Stuff market at the end of June, Sunday 23rd to be exact so I had to print some more bicycle cards. These guys are really popular. I'm hoping to be a bit more exciting and print them in more colours soon. I also plan to be printing a new design. Yay!</div>

This is the flyer for the last market we did. Man the weather was ridiculous. Sunny one minute, then dark clouds then threw it down with rain. ARGH! BUT loads of people still came out and we had a really great day so I guess that proved how much people want to come to the markets. Our next one is Sunday 29th September in Ipswich Town Hall. Visit the <a href="http://www.imakefunstuff.co.uk/">website</a> for news or our <a href="http://www.facebook.com/imakefunstuff">facebook</a> page. We update that most.</div>

I've felt inspired lately to try and make clothes. I've always been really impatient with that kind of thing because i'm not very good at being precise but i'm actually doing pretty well so far. This is a t-shirt style tunic made from 50s fabric. The fabric is a bit stiff so it was rather boxy so I added some darts and took it in a little so it fit better. I added the green zip but as it went the whole length of the back it feels a bit like a straight jacket! Haha! So I will be changing that. More pics when it's not looking so awful. Since then I've made myself a wee blouse and i'll post a pic of that on in the near future.</div>

Lastly is a little doodle which I cut a stencil from and turned into a screenprint. I've wanted to do a cat print for ages, but I've never done a design i'm happy with until now. I printed 5 bags and have sold 4 already so I think curly cat will be made into a proper stencil. Watch this space for cat products!</div>

My colleagues are all practising artists, constantly making new work and using techniques I may have never tried before. My students are a dynamic and vibrant bunch of young people, most of which are eager to learn and develop their work in exciting ways and try new things. They are risk takers.<br />
<br />
Most of the time this really keeps my juices flowing. My inspiration is always topped up because of the materials we have, the workshops we work in and the equipment we use. However, sometimes, such as now, I do have a slump and this stops me feeling motivated and inspired. Consequently my mood doesn't improve, because i'm not creating.<br />
<br />
At those dire times I turn to blogs, Pinterest and most importantly my huge collection of art books to help. So i've picked my three "go to" books that boost my mood and inspire me to get back to my desk to show you. The titles are links to the books on Amazon.co.uk<br />

I want to make work in the same way. The processes used include <span style="background-color: white;">silkscreen printing, classical typography, hand lettering, woodcutting and folk art. Vera Neumann was an artist and designer, most famed for her beautiful bold and colourful scarves. She was an innovator and a wonderfully successful female entrepreneur who believed art should be accessible to everyone. This book contains full colour images of her gorgeous scarves as well as pictures from her factories, sketches and a great picture of Marilyn Monroe wearing nothing but a sheer Vera scarf. These images come from the wonderful book Print and Pattern 2. I know it's the second book but I had this one before only recently getting the original and have used this edition loads for inspiration so I had to pick it first. It's really easy to use because all the artists are in alphabetical order and the images are in beautiful crisp colour. The design of the book is also a joy, with the same font design and colour schemes running throughout. Don't you just love that attention to detail?</div>

Anything I make as a product to sell will start off in my sketchbook or on scraps of paper. I print out stacks of images to inspire me mainly for colours and patterns or subjects. <br />
<br />
Today I thought I'd write a post about the materials I use to make work in my sketchbook. I hope the photos are ok, there is no natural light in my studio. <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHUCW3S7wtrbHnIodXZcOG8cdTYlRfr8OkUTfHaiIQ73KzOZ8_7thWj0fwe9nmfwzcDlOZUpus5d6CHDxSYKr4aCV_FMHGHTFEnFpl76BXAJdJRV_TOooUvyCCQXtnyVjzkRgwtbq4QdE/s640/blogger-image-391439847.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHUCW3S7wtrbHnIodXZcOG8cdTYlRfr8OkUTfHaiIQ73KzOZ8_7thWj0fwe9nmfwzcDlOZUpus5d6CHDxSYKr4aCV_FMHGHTFEnFpl76BXAJdJRV_TOooUvyCCQXtnyVjzkRgwtbq4QdE/s320/blogger-image-391439847.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
First off is my sketchbook, which is just an A4 one from Paperchase I got in the sale. I usually like to use either the WHSmith A5 ringbound ones or Seawhite of Brighton A4 as I really like the quality of paper but this Paperchase one is nice too. I'd buy another one for sure.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Secondly is my pencil case. I bought this 10 years ago at the London Transport Museum shop when they just started making products out of the same Moquette they use for the seats on the Tube trains. It cost me £11 which is a lot of money for a pencil case but its lasting the years so worth it I think!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglLMX1A7yj4bzk_iK78G_4WlZkLRuLZDYmwxIycMBKFTjDqUGhXSNVO6Du5NLqNZ5fdWqRnEREsmlqr43-U_l71aG3r3702So9196TbyPq9f_lpxsi6VC073yI3axbVeCXcQ8wfTv-Icw/s1600/IMG_2002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglLMX1A7yj4bzk_iK78G_4WlZkLRuLZDYmwxIycMBKFTjDqUGhXSNVO6Du5NLqNZ5fdWqRnEREsmlqr43-U_l71aG3r3702So9196TbyPq9f_lpxsi6VC073yI3axbVeCXcQ8wfTv-Icw/s320/IMG_2002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Next up is my pens of choice! I didn't include my pencil as that's a bit boring an standard but I prefer to use 2B pencils, proper ones not mechanical pencils. I like to use Sharpies for thick and thin black outlines, though the nibs on the standard ones dull quite quickly. I also like to use Posca pens on top of ink or permanent marker because of their opacity. On the stripes of purple ink in the picture above I have used a Posca over the top.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuVur8o-G-NQlqxKW3Bxl7Oo_3Ty4UOL7EcBId5aXjeFIMxIjTkHVBbJIlcil6MDE1o5RmYauwTcKIjZZFDoaYW0myzABkxBLRVlWCccozelFCMeFmavfTYXB9otK4iHh7xzAqJRKRASc/s1600/IMG_2005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuVur8o-G-NQlqxKW3Bxl7Oo_3Ty4UOL7EcBId5aXjeFIMxIjTkHVBbJIlcil6MDE1o5RmYauwTcKIjZZFDoaYW0myzABkxBLRVlWCccozelFCMeFmavfTYXB9otK4iHh7xzAqJRKRASc/s320/IMG_2005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy1tHgHZQU_-mlYOw_6gx670mFW0QWiePNQE9-OdJr3LSIUNgWBGLiWTTEsBt0sn1ZNdJqib1wuXEzWC1Yp0ciAa-qrD9Kpi-jGZCT3fnExM4BwGmvaf4UoEUDKk0vhdFTGgs1YXul1kQ/s1600/IMG_2001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy1tHgHZQU_-mlYOw_6gx670mFW0QWiePNQE9-OdJr3LSIUNgWBGLiWTTEsBt0sn1ZNdJqib1wuXEzWC1Yp0ciAa-qrD9Kpi-jGZCT3fnExM4BwGmvaf4UoEUDKk0vhdFTGgs1YXul1kQ/s320/IMG_2001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I like to use graphic markers for colour in patterns or to fill in areas of colour on illustrations. I also use these twin Kurecolor markers to draw on shrink plastic to make my teacup and wool badges and earrings. However some colours smudge if you try and varnish over them which is really annoying.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I recently got a whole pack of these ZIG Wink of Stella pens which are glitter. They aren't like any other pens i've used that have glitter in them, they're just like felt tips. I also got a clear glitter one so you can make any line glittery. I love these and need to use them much more.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTCUa-fp_JKEAZdDtk7oBpsN0X1A0QyQDGfvBOxHhfFcTNVjbasXtMm8Msvhmh81TckcwmidjszVIIppZNQINZaMx7LR97wLBBeaTUVMJCv5TdJ8ebFhKqvtSaWga8JAJ4pcn8AxVDzMg/s1600/IMG_2007.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiTCUa-fp_JKEAZdDtk7oBpsN0X1A0QyQDGfvBOxHhfFcTNVjbasXtMm8Msvhmh81TckcwmidjszVIIppZNQINZaMx7LR97wLBBeaTUVMJCv5TdJ8ebFhKqvtSaWga8JAJ4pcn8AxVDzMg/s320/IMG_2007.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly, I love stickers and geometric shapes, as you've probably noticed by now. I particularly like to use stickers to add to my patterns and sometimes cut them up and create more work out of strips of pattern. These day glo pink and green stickers are from Staples and Rymans and the other glittery ones (oh yes!) are from The Range. I think they're meant for card making and scrap booking but I use them for patterns. Below are some examples showing all these materials used together.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjESMwuAqxJPqOCGQNnhp_x3AAqmwNgPuJigJjltsaMI5JDnzTd110tvaKAPk-zcax4no07EG7QIotJT_CzMFgxPYhiZ7FNJj-Nci0W8cONTbu4d6ePymYalLkcSLDr0cyoPmucMt6nOYc/s1600/IMG_2008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjESMwuAqxJPqOCGQNnhp_x3AAqmwNgPuJigJjltsaMI5JDnzTd110tvaKAPk-zcax4no07EG7QIotJT_CzMFgxPYhiZ7FNJj-Nci0W8cONTbu4d6ePymYalLkcSLDr0cyoPmucMt6nOYc/s320/IMG_2008.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfFVtU5BQO5B2Sd1TZxqjLF73wpbewcnsAleAvCeCl5Wnf7_c-_BCTKJtSU82r82UYmgGLiovXcxbBov5QIHNJO88UmFbBxEr1lG1ybQKw0Bv9FK7i2iQsnioBPTdPMMXjy233J1GO5LI/s1600/IMG_2009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfFVtU5BQO5B2Sd1TZxqjLF73wpbewcnsAleAvCeCl5Wnf7_c-_BCTKJtSU82r82UYmgGLiovXcxbBov5QIHNJO88UmFbBxEr1lG1ybQKw0Bv9FK7i2iQsnioBPTdPMMXjy233J1GO5LI/s320/IMG_2009.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So there we have it! Next i'll do a post about the materials I use to make different products. </div>

We take a group of students every year to experience the city and I was lucky enough to go this year. It was only a few days and was a tiring trip but I would go back in a heartbeat. I do wish someone had invented teleportation though! I don't like long haul flights, so uncomfortable!<br />
<br />
I had a great time, shopping, visiting sights and eating! I went with my fabulous work friends, Kelly, Kate and Eli. Here are some pics from my trip...<br />

We crammed as much as we could into two and a half days, arriving at 10:30 (NY Time) on Monday night and leaving at 10:15 Thursday night. We had time to walk up to Times Square after we arrived at our hotel, perfectly situated on 7th & 34th. The next day we were go go go and I "crashed" several times needing some tea to refuel me. Which btw is not like home, at all!!! They do love their coffee, but sadly I don't drink it.<br />
<br />
On Tuesday we went for breakfast at Eisenberg's a fantastic cafe sort of place next to the beautiful Flat Iron building. We then went to Macy's and Sephora and caught the subway down to the Staten Island Ferry. We caught the number 1 train on the red line and got off at Retford Street. We had to walk down to the ferry terminal because the last two stops were flooded by Hurricane Sandy. We caught the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty because it's free and you get a good view of the Lady herself without having to pay to go to Ellis Island. You also get some amazing views of Manhattan Island. Sephora was absolutely awesome, I wish i'd bought more things you can't buy here as it was so cool. Like Space NK but bigger and full of cosmetics you've never heard of over here unless you're a little obsessed like me.<br />
<br />
After that we walked and walked, through the financial district, past Ground Zero, stopped in Century 21 (which actually disappointed me a little. The TK Maxx style of it kinda devalued the designer names for me, took away the special feeling of the names) We then walked up to Canal Street, through China Town and Little Italy and ended up at a famous pizza place called Lombardi's. The pizzas were huge and we had to wait a little as it was so busy, you could understand why after tasting the pizzas! After dinner we caught a cab up to Grand Central Station and walked back to our hotel down Park Avenue and past the Empire State Building. What a day! I slept like a log that night.<br />
<br />
The next day unfortunately I was suffering a bit from Traveller's tummy so only had toast for breakfast at Eisenberg's then headed back to the hotel for a rest. I managed to summon the energy to walk down to 10th and 21st to investigate Printed Matter. A shop that sells only zines and books made by artists. It was quite overwhelming and would have been hours of fun flicking through the books had I not had a rather grumbly belly! After that I caught a cab up to 5th and 59th to meet Kelly and Eli so we could go to Bloomingdale's. Oh my it was beautiful! What a fancy place full of exciting concessions and Bloomie's souvenirs. We really enjoyed ourselves in there. We went back to the hotel for a rest after that and then I dragged myself out of bed to walk up to the Rockefeller centre. Wow did I feel ill at this point! Stopping at every crossing I was praying for it to hurry up and change as standing still made me feel worse. But we made it and it was worth the effort too. A stunning area filled with flags of the countries of the world, fairy light decorated trees and the ice rink of course! We did a little shopping, took some snaps and generally enjoyed the beauty of the area. I started to feel better by the time we walked back and so we popped back in to Macy's for some souvenir shopping then ate pasta at a corner cafe near our hotel where a lady who needed someone to talk to spoke to us abou God. I popped into some newsagents to pick up some magazines for Chris which you can't get in the UK and the most stinky sweets for my Uncle. Wint-O-Green flavour Lifesavers. Seriously they smell like Germolene of TCP it's hideous! I had to wash all the clothes in my suitcase when I got back.<br />
<br />
On the last day Kelly and I took it easy. We started with tea and breakfast at Starbucks and then a wander round the Empire State building. Some shopping in Walgreens and CVS for more cosmetics and then a trip down 5th avenue towards the Flat Iron building to go to American Apparel. I bought a lovely skirt and a beautiful striped dress with buttons down the back. We then had to go back to the hotel to check out and store our suitcases before one last shopping trip and lunch at Fanelli cafe on Prince and Mercer Street. Fanelli's was awesome. Think classic American bar, people sitting and eating at the bar and joking with the bartender. An old old building with a dial phone and mosaic floor. Kelly and I had to wait for Eli and Kate so were in the way a bit but chatted to other people waiting and the bartender Bob, who we now know is a bit infamous (I found an article about him in The New Yorker!) he joked about our English accents and bought us some drinks. We then had classic burgers and fries. A perfect end to our trip!<br />
<br />
If i could go back tomorrow I would. It was more than I expected it to be, full of interesting people, different nationalities and so many interesting places to see and do. I loved seeing all the iron fire escapes on the apartment buildings, the yellow cabs, the water towers, the giant billboards, the famous streets such as 5th avenue, Madison avenue, Park avenue and areas such as Soho, Chelsea and Tribeca. If you get a chance, definitely go!Jesshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11665025931197824891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3781962137379902748.post-53249172818136313832013-03-23T13:50:00.001+00:002013-03-23T13:50:02.730+00:00Weather for taking photos...Well I don't know about you but I am really tired of this dull, grey, cold weather. In Suffolk today we have snow yet again. Not as bad as in other parts of the UK but it has been non stop since first thing this morning. <br />
<br />
This means I can't take photos of new products to put in my shops and show my readers. Or do any other blog post that involves taking decent pictures. <br />
<br />
So for now here's a picture of Belle Vue first thing this morning. <br />
<br />
I'm off to New York on Monday for a few days so if I get wifi I'll post some exciting pictures (probably mainly food) from there. <br />
<br />
Shops are closed until I return. <br />
